Exchange with Universiti Malaysia Sarawak

We were delighted to welcome Doctor in Public Health students from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak last week for a meaningful exchange on public health systems. The meeting was a platform to learn more about how countries manage the public health systems, contributing to possible areas of research.

Prof Alex Cook, Vice Dean of Global Health, spoke about the ways research can provide reliable evidence for policymakers. He shared some examples of how mathematical modellers of our school supported the Covid-19 pandemic, and work in the tobacco control policies, showing that strong academia-policy partnerships can be useful in driving impact for public health

Assoc Prof Jason Yap shared insights on Singapore’s healthcare system and population health strategies, while offering an engaging perspective on how AI can be used to explore the evolution of healthcare systems. He further shared about aspects of public health training in Singapore, prompting an engaging comparison with our Malaysian fellows.

On translational projects, there was a candid sharing on the realities of managing translational projects and practicalities of managing translations.

Thank you UNIMAS, for the warm exchange. We are glad to connect with fellow public health professionals from the ASEAN region and look forward to more of these engagements, gaining new insights and perspectives on global health.
