Public Health Thought Leadership Dialogue: Overcoming Challenges with Smoking Cessation
Did you know that an average smoker loses about 14 years of life as compared to a non-smoker? One cigarette contains more than 7,000 chemicals, of which 1% are known carcinogens.

Infectious disease epidemiology research in Brunei Darussalam: Challenges and opportunities in a small country
Infectious disease research has received much attention in Brunei, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. This seminar gives an overview of the health indicators and current research landscape in Brunei, with emphasis on infectious disease & epidemiology. I will also talk about my research experiences as a quite early career academic at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), and what I’m going to achieve during my 11-month stay at SSHSPH, under Alex’s mentorship.

Viral dynamics models for epidemiology and clinical science
During the COVID-19 pandemic an unprecedented amount of longitudinal viral load data have been collected. In this presentation, I will show how these data can be leveraged to develop mathematical models of within-host SARS-CoV-2 viral dynamics. I will then provide an overview of my studies where this approach has been used to provide insights into COVID-19 epidemiology (e.g., estimation of incubation period and improvements of isolation guidelines) and clinical science (sample size calculation for antiviral clinical trials).

Should secondary data users pay to access de-identified health data?
This presentation discusses the challenges and potential solutions to sharing de-identified individual level health data. The talk opens with a debate question about paying to access data for secondary use and goes on the discuss other ethical and practical aspects of data sharing such as consent, data ownership and potential harms of sharing. Prof. Phaik Yeong Cheah will also talk about current data sharing requirements by funders and journals, and some practical solutions to promote data sharing while mitigating potential harms. She will draw on her experience coordinating the MORU Data Access Committee, her own research on data sharing and chairing Covid-19 Clinical Research Coalition Data Sharing Working Group.

Developing a generic health-related quality of life instrument for paediatric health technology assessment in Singapore
Preference-based health-related quality of life measures are preferred tools for quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs) calculation in cost-utility analysis (CUA) of health interventions or technologies. While quite a few preference-based measures (PBM) are available for measurement and valuation of adult’s health-related quality of life, no PBMs have been made available for use to assess paediatric products in Singapore. EQ-5D for youth (EQ-5D-Y) is one of the few PBMs for use in paediatrics. This research program aims to localize EQ-5D-Y to Singapore. We conducted a series of studies to culturally adapt the EQ-5D-Y questionnaire and assess its content validity and psychometric properties in local paediatric populations. A valuation study is under the way to develop a local value set for EQ-5D-Y.
