The 2025 National Nutrition Survey by the Ministry of Health, found that sodium intake overall, has increased. People are also eating out more frequently.
Assoc Prof Mary Chong, Assistant Dean of Education at the NUS School of Public Health, highlighted that sodium may not always be obvious in what we consume. Flavorful dishes and trendy food tend to be heavily seasoned, while their spicy and rich flavours may mask high sodium levels. Assoc Prof Mary encourages greater awareness of our sodium intake.
Despite our busy lifestyles, taking small steps make a difference to our health, such as not finishing the soup base or sauces when dining out. Asking for sauces to be served separately, requesting for less salt or seasonings, or combining takeout food with lower-sodium dishes cooked at home can reduce our overall sodium intake.
