Overview

Workplace health is vital for public well-being, especially in Singapore, where 70% of residents are working. This course provides an overview of Workplace Safety and Health (WSH), focusing on risk control and preventing work-related illnesses and accidents. Students evaluate strategies for promoting workplace safety, ensuring compliance with legislation. They develop skills to assess hazards, implement controls, and understand legal requirements, preparing for real-world WSH challenges.

The course culminates in a workplace assessment and presentation, allowing practical application of these principles. By fostering a critical understanding of WSH, the course enhances awareness of health and safety hazards in future careers, contributing to a culture of proactive risk management and safer workplaces overall.

Course Objectives

  1. Apply the fundamentals approaches and principles of WSH in order to conduct workplace occupational safety and health assessment.
  2. Explain the relevant legislation pertaining to WSH to interested parties and employers.
  3. Explain the importance of workplace health promotion and how it will benefit the employers and employees
  4. Apply and integrate concepts learnt in this course to conduct a workplace safety and health assessment.

Who Should Attend?

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Relevant public health related work experience
  • Candidates with other qualifications and experience may be considered on a case by case basis, subject to approval

Assessment & Certification

This is a SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) approved course. As part of SSG funding requirements, participants have to achieve at least 75% attendance and pass all assessment(s)/examination(s).

An electronic certificate will be issued to all participants who complete the course:

  • Certificate of Competence – Attain a ‘C’ grade or above and meet a minimum of 75% attendance
  • Certificate of Participation – Attain a grade lower than ‘C’ and meet a minimum of 75% attendance

Course Instructor

Prof Chia Sin Eng
Associate Professor Chia Sin Eng

Dr Chia Sin Eng is an occupational physician and Associate Professor with the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health and Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore (NUS) where he teaches both undergraduate medical students, post-graduates, and doctors in the Graduate Diploma in Occupational Medicine (OM) and Master of Public Health (OM) Courses.

He was seconded to the Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Council and the Ministry of Manpower as a senior consultant to formulate and implement the Total WSH from 2018-2020. The Total WSH is now a national programme and has been applied in many companies.

Remarks:

  • All enrolled candidates will also be required to pay a Student Services Fee of S$25.70*.
  • Self-Sponsored participants can use their SkillsFuture Credits to pay for or offset course fees. SkillsFuture Credit claim has to be submitted to SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) within 60 days before course commencement. SSG will not allow claims to be made after the first day of the course.
  • The University reserves the right to review and adjust the course fees and make changes to the programme structure and requirements as necessary and accordingly without prior notice.
