Overview

Investing in the health of women, children and adolescents is critical for every nation’s development.

This course equips students with skills in analysis, evaluation, and advocacy necessary for navigating and advancing maternal, child, and adolescent health policies and programs.

Using a life-course perspective, we explore the socio-economic, behavioural and political determinants shaping maternal, child and adolescent health, and critically assess the effectiveness of policies, programmes and services to tackle these challenges. Focus will be on identifying obstacles, strategies, and innovative solutions to enhance their health and wellbeing.

We will examine how these efforts align with and contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals’ (SDGs) impact on health and well-being, education, gender equity, and poverty reduction.

Course Objectives

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  1. Critically evaluate the effectiveness of current global, national, and local policies and programmes aimed at promoting maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health.
  2. Apply a life course framework to address the determinants influencing the health trajectories of woman’s, children, and adolescents.
  3. Examine the impact of biological determinants across various developmental stages—pre-conception, prenatal, foetal, childhood, and adolescent—on growth, development, and health outcomes.
  4. Define how social determinants intersect with adolescent development to shape adolescent sexual and reproductive health outcomes.
  5. Identify the effective elements of antenatal care, essential obstetric care, and post-natal / newborn care at facility and community levels.
  6. Propose strategies to promote maternal, child and adolescent health through policy advocacy, integrating current evidence with practical advocacy skills.
