Ms Guo Huiling

Having completed my Master of Public Health with SSHSPH in 2016, I was sure that NUS will still be my top choice to consider when I was applying for my PhD earlier this year. I find it of great importance for a school to provide knowledge both within and beyond the textbooks – from the theories of science to the know-hows in conducting research based on others’ experiences. With NUS being a learning and research institution, the environment provides effective learning from the knowledgeable teaching faculties and also interactions with research staff and fellow students. Despite everyone having different research directions, active discussions and exchange of ideas are easily achieved, which in turn makes one feel included and provides an opportunity to learn from others. Moreover, the strategic location of NUS being next to NUH reminds me of why I am pursuing the programme and what contributions I can make to the healthcare system in Singapore through my research.

I am very grateful that The Courage Fund PhD (Infectious Disease) Scholarship has enabled me to continue my educational pursuit in the research field. With my full-time work while taking a PhD on a part-time basis, TCF’s support allows me to focus on acquiring knowledge and skills that are necessary and applicable to my daily research work. This scholarship signifies more than just a financial support but it also recognises the importance of Public Health research and the need to excel and contribute back to the community. I am truly blessed by the generous support of The Courage Fund.
