Commentary: Feeling old and useless – the silent suffering of seniors dealing with mental health challenges

This year’s theme for World Mental Health Day is “mental health is a universal human right”, highlighting mental health as integral part of our overall health and wellbeing. Recognising this, mental health prevention and support will be incorporated as part of the General Practitioners’ scope of practice under Healthier SG in the coming two years.

In the 2022 MOH National Population Health Survey, older adults (60-74 years) were less willing to seek help from healthcare professionals compared to younger cohorts. This is exacerbated when it comes to mental health as it remains stigmatised and discussing it can be seen as a sign of vulnerability.
