Thomas Lowe
Research Fellow, NUS
I have thoroughly enjoyed working with each community and learning more about growing older in Singapore. Each community has enriched my experience both as a researcher and as a member of the SAGE community.
I am a Research Fellow working within the SAGE project, headed by Dr Zoe Hildon at the NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health. I am a social geographer and much of my research expertise revolves around lived experiences and perceptions, especially of older adults living in the community and in many cases providing informal care for a loved one.
As a qualitative researcher, I use a range of methods including interviews, focus groups, and more arts-based, creative methods like graphic elicitation and mind mapping. I hold a BA in Human Geography from the University of Manchester and Hong Kong, an MSc in International Development Studies from Utrecht University and a PhD from the University of Groningen.
Throughout my education and research, I have worked in a variety of contexts around the world, including the UK, India, Ethiopia, Hong Kong and Singapore. This experience across different contexts has shaped my understanding and appreciation of how socio-cultural context plays an integral role in how people experience and perceive everyday life, and their interactions with their communities and networks.
