Appreciative Inquiry

Appreciative Inquiry allows us to empower communities to take action on the findings in ways that they want and can actively do themselves.

At SAGE we work with community researchers to implement the Appreciative Inquiry approach focusing on strengths, advantages or opportunities. Ultimately, this approach helps older adults and communities explore what works, what does not work and together imagine how their communities can be. This approach follows three key principles:

1

We start by listening

Through participatory methods, we place lived experiences and community at the centre of engagement. Qualitative approaches are suitable for engaging seniors and a wide variety of stakeholders at the same time.

2

We build with communities

Unlike traditional research, we work closely with our community co-producers who help us explore, analyse, and connect with what is important.

3

We turn ideas into action

Informed by the 5Ds of Appreciative Inquiry (Define, Discover, Dream, Design, and Deliver), we empower communities to take action on the findings in ways that they want and can actively do themselves.

DEFINE

What are our collective goals, and how will we work together?

Informed by the 5Ds of Appreciative Inquiry (Define, Discover, Dream, Design, and Deliver), we empower communities to act on the findings in ways they choose and can carry out themselves.

DISCOVER

What needs improving, and what assets can support ageing well?

Participants used Photovoice—a method that uses photography to document lived experience—spending three weeks taking photos around their community, focusing on the lives of older people. They also gathered information on existing assets they could draw on once future plans became clearer. Photovoice revealed hidden challenges: loneliness, financial strain, and gaps in health services and accessibility. These stories helped identify what needed to change.

DREAM

What can the future look like for seniors?

Communities imagined new futures for their neighbourhoods where seniors are supported in their wellbeing. Walls were filled with sketches, ideas, and possibilities from small changes to bold visions, and we discussed how to make these a reality.

DESIGN

How can we make things happen?

SAGE co-producers are tirelessly working on how to make the solutions a reality. Each site has unique ways of working toward healthy, meaningful ageing in the community. Our community museums showcase some of these thoughts, ideas, and dreams!
