Overview

In the last hundred years, the role of the workplace in public health has evolved to encompass the continuum of health of the individual worker and to support greater public health efforts (such as pandemic and chronic disease control). This course allows students to apply public health strategies and considerations to manage health issues and related challenges in the workplace setting. Students will learn about the issues that influence both the health of the worker and the worker’s ability to work in different settings, and the approaches to addressing these issues.

Students will explore how to safeguard the health and fitness of employees in the workplace. They will also analyse the role of workplaces in controlling infectious and chronic diseases. Specific topics such as ethics of workplace health, vulnerable populations in the workplace, and post-pandemic workplace safety and health will be covered.

Course Objectives

At the end of this course, the student will learn:

  1. Appraise key public health systems at the workplace
  2. Analyse the role of the workplace in infectious and chronic disease control
  3. Illustrate linkage of the determinants of health and fitness to work of the working population

Who Should Attend?

Professionals working in employee health and occupational health, as well as other professionals who are interested in workplace health.

Entry Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Relevant public health related work experience
  • Candidates with other qualifications and experience may be considered on a case by case basis, subject to approval

Assessment & Certification

This is a SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) approved course. As part of SSG funding requirements, participants have to achieve at least 75% attendance and pass all assessment(s)/examination(s).

An electronic certificate will be issued to all participants who complete the course:

  • Certificate of Competence – Attain a ‘C’ grade or above and meet a minimum of 75% attendance
  • Certificate of Participation – Attain a grade lower than ‘C’ and meet a minimum of 75% attendance

Course Instructor

Assoc Prof Ng Wee Tong
Associate Professor Ng Wee Tong 

Dr Ng Wee Tong is a medical specialist in Occupational and Aviation Medicine. He is currently an Associate Professor at the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health. Prior to that, he was a medical officer in the Republic of Singapore Airforce and a Medical Director with ST Healthcare.

His professional interests include the provision of services for worker health, fitness to work, workplace health promotion and fatigue/ shift work management. He is also an adjunct lecturer with the Singapore University of Social Sciences and a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine (Singapore).

Dr Ng also holds a Masters in Adult Learning and is an advocate for the advancement of educational pedagogies in higher learning.

  • Self-Sponsored participants can use their SkillsFuture Credits to pay for or offset course fees. SkillsFuture Credit claim has to be submitted to SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) within 60 days before course commencement. SSG will not allow claims to be made after the first day of the course.
