Overview

This course addresses the economic and financing aspects of the production, distribution, and organisation of health care services and delivery. This includes the structure of health care delivery and insurance markets, demand for and supply of health services, pricing of services, cost of care, financing mechanisms, and their impact on the relevant markets.

A special emphasis will be given to market failures and the role of government in the market for health services. Through textbook readings and discussions of seminal articles and more recent empirical applications in health economics, participants will learn the economic way of thinking. They will be given the opportunity to showcase these skills through a series of research papers written throughout the course that will culminate with a final manuscript that provides an in-depth analysis of a critical health issue.

Course Objectives

Upon course completion, participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss the approaches and viewpoints that economists bring to the heath field, and with the published literature of health economics
  2. Use some of the analytical methods and tools employed by economists in the health sector
  3. Discuss some of the most important economic issues and problems faces by the health sector, and of the extent to which economic analysis can assist in their solution

Assessment & Certification

This is a SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) approved course. As part of SSG funding requirements, participants have to achieve at least 75% attendance and pass all assessment(s)/examination(s).

An electronic certificate will be issued to all participants who complete the course:

  • Certificate of Competence – Attain a ‘C’ grade or above and meet a minimum of 75% attendance
  • Certificate of Participation – Attain a grade lower than ‘C’ and meet a minimum of 75% attendance

Course Instructor

Asst Prof Wee Hwee Lin
Associate Professor Wee Hwee Lin

Dr Wee Hwee Lin is Associate Professor at the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health as well as the Department of Pharmacy, Faculty of Science, National University of Singapore. She is also the Director of the Center for Health Intervention and Policy Evaluation Research based in SSHSPH. Dr Wee contributes actively to the local and international academic communities. She has conducted research for the World Health Organization and the International Decision Support Initiative (iDSI). She is a recipient of the International Society for Quality of Life Research (ISOQOL) Young Investigator Award in 2011 and served as an elected member of the Board of Directors of ISOQOL from 2013-2015. She was also an associate editor of Health and Quality of Life Outcomes (2012 – 2016), a leading journal on health-related quality of life. In addition, she was involved in developing the International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement Diabetes Standard Dataset. Dr Wee is currently serving on the National Advisory Committee on Cancer and was two-time President for the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research Singapore Chapter in 2009 and 2018. Dr Wee’s current work involves the use of real-world evidence in health technology assessments and economic evaluation of precision medicine.

  • All enrolled candidates will also be required to pay a Student Services Fee of S$25.46*.
  • Self-Sponsored participants can use their SkillsFuture Credits to pay for or offset course fees. SkillsFuture Credit claim has to be submitted to SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) within 60 days before course commencement. SSG will not allow claims to be made after the first day of the course.
  • The University reserves the right to review and adjust the course fees and make changes to the programme structure and requirements as necessary and accordingly without prior notice.
