Overview
This course introduces students to global health policy and practice through themes of governance, security, development, equity, and environmental change. We critically analyse how globalisation affects health determinants and outcomes, including global health architecture, financing mechanisms, global disease burden, infectious disease control, humanitarian responses to conflicts and disasters, and environmental threats. Our goal is to explore strategies for addressing contemporary global health issues.
Course Objectives
Upon completion, participants will be able to:
- Critically describe global health governance and architecture, including how globalisation has shaped current disease trends, and the roles of institutional actors and existing or proposed partnerships and agreements in addressing global health issues.
- Analyse key global health challenges, including infectious and non-communicable diseases, health disparities, healthcare financing and access, conflict and disasters, migration, and environmental change.
- Critique how complex and inter-related socio-political and commercial determinants of health contribute to health and wealth inequities within and between countries, and propose evidence-informed approaches for promoting health equity and improving population health worldwide.

- Bachelor’s degree
- Relevant public health related work experience
- Candidates with other qualifications and experience may be considered on a case by case basis, subject to approval
Assessment & Certification
This is a SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) approved course. As part of SSG funding requirements, participants have to achieve at least 75% attendance and pass all assessment(s)/examination(s).
An electronic certificate will be issued to all participants who complete the course:
- Certificate of Competence – Attain a ‘C’ grade or above and meet a minimum of 75% attendance
- Certificate of Participation – Attain a grade lower than ‘C’ and meet a minimum of 75% attendance
Course Instructor
Associate Professor Natasha Howard
She is an interdisciplinary health policy and systems researcher, focused primarily on low and middle-income countries. She draws primarily from sociology, social psychology, and global health/development to engage in policy-relevant research in infectious disease control in Asia and strengthening health system responses during protracted adversity (e.g. fragility, complex emergencies, displacement). Her teaching has included developing and managing a postgraduate course and modules, editing and writing textbooks, supervising doctoral and masters-level student research, and mentoring students and professionals.

Remarks:
- All enrolled candidates will also be required to pay a Student Services Fee of S$25.70*.
- Self-Sponsored participants can use their SkillsFuture Credits to pay for or offset course fees. SkillsFuture Credit claim has to be submitted to SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) within 60 days before course commencement. SSG will not allow claims to be made after the first day of the course.
