Advanced Epidemiology I & II
Course Information
This module covers advanced methods for the design, conduct, analysis and interpretation of epidemiologic studies. The main focus is on analytical studies that aim to identify risk factors for diseases particularly case-control and cohort studies. Topics include causal inference, study design, methods of handling confounding and identifying effect modification, measurement error and information bias, selection bias, lifestyle and molecular epidemiology, and meta-analysis.

Students will apply these methods to the interpretation of published research and the design of a new research project. The main focus is on analytical studies that aim to identify risk factors for diseases particularly case-control and cohort studies. Topics include causal inference, study design, methods of handling confounding and identifying effect modification, measurement error and information bias, selection bias, lifestyle and molecular epidemiology, and meta-analysis. Students will be expected to critique research articles and participate in facilitated group discussions.

Note: Monday classes for Advanced Epidemiology I and Advanced Epidemiology II are conducted together. Courses preclude each other i.e. participants are not allowed to enrol in both courses concurrently.
Who Should Attend?
Individuals who are interested to learn more about epidemiology and its applications. Participants should have knowledge of principles of epidemiology, basic epidemiology or basic biostatistics.
Assessment & Certification
This is a SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) approved course. As part of SSG funding requirements, participants have to achieve at least 75% attendance and pass all assessment(s)/examination(s).
An electronic certificate will be issued to all participants who complete the course:
- Certificate of Competence – Attain a ‘C’ grade or above and meet a minimum of 75% attendance
- Certificate of Participation – Attain a grade lower than ‘C’ and meet a minimum of 75% attendance
Course Instructor
Assistant Professor Seow Wei Jie
Dr Seow completed her postdoctoral training in the Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics (DCEG) at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), United States. She has a doctorate in Environmental and Molecular Epidemiology from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Her interests include molecular and environmental epidemiology of chronic diseases.

- All enrolled candidates will also be required to pay a Student Services Fee of S$25.46*.
