SSHSPH welcomes new batch of MPH students

44 students embarked on a new journey in public health as the NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health (SSHSPH) welcomed the 2013/2014 batch of Master of Public Health (MPH) students to the School on 5 August 2013. Associate Professor Jeannette Lee, Vice-Dean of Education and MPH Programme Director, and Dean Professor Chia Kee Seng kickstarted the Orientation programme by welcoming the incoming batch to the School. SSHSPH Launches Fitness Friday

On 2 August 2013, faculty and staff alike gathered for the launch of Fitness Friday, a Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health fitness initiative in which staff will be allowed to take time off on Fridays from 4pm onwards to participate in various exercise interest groups. The launch of this exercise programme is in line with the School’s efforts in spearheading the initiative to create not just a health-promoting School within the campus, but subsequently a health-promoting NUS as well. Intellectually-disabled adults face ‘higher risk of chronic diseases’ like diabetes

A study conducted on the health of adults with intellectual disabilities has found that they are more prone to chronic conditions like hypertension than the general population. The study, conducted by the NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health and  involving 227 intellectually disabled adults from the Movement for the Intellectually Disabled Singapore (MINDS), found that intellectually disabled adults had a 22.5% chance of developing hypertension, and 34.8% chance of suffering from high cholesterol. Serving the vulnerable: Ms Safiyah Salim (MPH ’14)

Ms Safiyah Salim, a student of the NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health, sees herself as a public health professional, hopefully having the opportunity to serve vulnerable populations. Young, educated, and indulging in risky sex

Young and educated men who have casual sex are less likely to use protection then older customers who visit brothels, a survey has found. The study, led by Assoc Prof Wong Mee Lian of the NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health. sampled 1,219 heterosexual Singaporean men on their sexual risk behaviour. Assoc Prof Wong said the men who met women online or at entertainment venues may be putting themselves at greater risk due to their spontaneous and alcohol-fuelled behaviour.
