Giving Stories
Ms Nurliyana Binte Daros
The undergraduate studies in Sociology have provided me with a lens of critical inquiry through which I discovered my steep inclination towards the field of public health and health disparities. This interest is deepened as I step into the working world of research undertaking, in both sociology and ageing research. Coming from a social science (and non-medical practitioner) background, I am confronted with the lack of hands-on experience and depth of knowledge in public health – and this fuels a thirst for a more specialised education in public health.
The privilege to study at NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health has taken my interest in public health to a greater level, as the programme takes on an interdisciplinary approach that allows me to explore the field from various angles. The intense rigour of the programme and competitive environment with students who are medical experts provided an impetus for a steep learning curve, essential for an aspiring public health practitioner.
The Saw Swee Hock Scholarship has greatly enhanced my study experience in public health as a full-time student as it makes viable a full and enriching immersion into the Masters programme. It instills in me the commitment to make the best of this learning experience, driven by a passion to serve the community especially vulnerable populations such as women, elderly and minority groups who are disadvantaged and experience differentiated access to healthcare. This academic pursuit would not have been possible without your generous and dedicated support for aspiring public health individuals to explore their potential to contribute effectively to the public health in Singapore and beyond.
