Community preparedness and prehospital care systems are vital pillars of an effective healthcare system. The resilience of the community is key to emergencies especially those that are time sensitive such as cardiac arrest, trauma, heart attacks, strokes and respiratory distress.

The best practices for building up a community that is resilient to disaster and prepared for emergency response continues to be poorly understood and complex. The adage “When you have seen one EMS system, you have seen one EMS system” continues to hold true today. The variation in survival rates of emergencies between high and resource setting for conditions such as cardiac arrest may differ over 1000%, which is unique compared to chronic illnesses compared across high and low resource settings.

Preparing communities are complex, resource intensive endeavors – health technologies and digital platforms present new opportunities to overcome these complexities, enable mass adoption and scaling up of community resilience.
