Synopsis:

In this session, participants will learn about the role of mindfulness in stress reduction and be able to experience a simple mindfulness practice.

About the speaker:

A/Prof Mabel Yap is currently Director, Professional Training and Assessment Standards Division, MOH, where she oversees development and implementation of assessments for doctors/specialists and accreditation of healthcare professionals. She is also Adjunct Associate Professor at the Office for Education, Duke–NUS Graduate Medical School and NUS School of Medicine.

Since graduation in 1984, she has worked as a clinician before specialising in Public Health. She was involved in the establishment of HPB and spearheaded the research, disease registry and strategic planning functions before returning to MOH in 2007 to start the Health Services Research Division. With the massive reforms in the Medical specialist training, she was posted to MS&D in 2011 to be involved in the reforms, and subsequently formed PTAS to develop and implement standards of training and assessment for medical and healthcare professionals, from undergraduate to post graduate training.

She received her PhD (Nutrition) from Wageningen University in Netherlands and her Postgraduate Diploma (Human Nutrition) from Deakin University, Australia. A/Prof Yap also has a Master’s degree in Science (Public Health) and medical degree from the National University of Singapore. Her PhD project led to revision of international BMI cut offs for obesity among Asians.

She has a special interest in wellness and is a trainer in MBSR (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction), fitness and art.
