At the Commencement ceremony on 14 July 2024, the School’s newly graduated students celebrated their remarkable achievement at the University Cultural Centre auditorium, in the proud presence of their schoolmates, faculty, and distinguished guests. This momentous occasion marked the triumphant culmination of their academic journey and the auspicious beginning of a new chapter, filled with boundless opportunities to make a significant impact on public health.
Delivering his address at the ceremony, NUS President Professor Tan Eng Chye expressed his firm belief that the Class of 2024 will be departing the University with the skills, mindsets and traits needed to make a strong impact and thrive in today’s ever-evolving environment. NUS Pro-Chancellor, Mr Teo Siong Seng graced the event as Presiding Officer.
Valedictorian for the Master of Public Health, Dr Arif Tyebally, delivered the valedictorian speech on behalf of the graduating class of 2024. He is currently a senior consultant at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital.
“As we embark on our individual journeys, let us pledge to utilize our knowledge and skills to effect meaningful change in the world around us. Together, let us dare to dream boldly, for it is through our collective efforts that we shall shape a brighter tomorrow.”
Embodying lifelong learning, PhD graduate Jade Soh overcame multiple odds and forge a remarkable journey of lifelong learning to complete a PhD degree in Public Health (Biostatistics) the age of 50. After working in clinical trials and epidemiological research for many years in the Ministry of Health and hospitals, Jade entered the School to pursue a Master of Public Health in 2007, which allowed her to broaden her expertise and deepen her understanding of public health. In 2019, she pursued a PhD, aiming to gain more comprehensive knowledge to better teach her students at Singapore Polytechnic.Read more about her inspirational story featured on NUS News here.
The ceremony concluded on a high note as the graduates ascended the stage to receive their degrees, marking the culmination of years of relentless hard work and dedication. The audience resounded with thunderous applause, honoring each graduate’s remarkable achievements and offering heartfelt words of encouragement.
