Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major threat to humans, animals, plants, and the environment today. Misuse and overuse of antimicrobials have accelerated the development and spread of AMR worldwide, resulting in an estimated 1.27 million human deaths in 2019.
This year, the World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW) has taken on the theme of “Preventing Antimicrobial Resistance Together ”, calling for cross-sectoral collaboration to contribute to the prudent use of antimicrobials and to strengthen preventive measures.
Joining the cause is ADVANcing Clinical Evidence in Infectious Diseases (ADVANCE-ID), a network of more than 30 hospitals across Asia collaborating in the conduct of clinical research in infectious diseases to improve the “evidence base” for the optimal prescribing of antibiotics to seriously ill patients with infections associated with AMR.
Dr Mo Yin is Deputy Director of ADVANCE-ID. She is an Infectious Diseases physician and clinician scientist based at the National University Hospital of Singapore. She has designed and conducted large multinational clinical trials which focus on finding pragmatic solutions for antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections. She is driven by the ideal of using quality clinical research to improve patient outcomes and propel global policies.
The challenges of AMR are complex and multifaceted, but they are not insurmountable. Thank you, Prof Paterson and Dr Mo, for being champions of AMR stewardship.
ADVANCE-ID is supported by Wellcome Trust and has its operational headquarters in the NUS Saw Swee School of Public Health.
