The 14th Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Series: ‘Diabetes Asia 2015’ Conference was held on 6 to 9 August 2015 at Hotel Istana, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and attracted doctors, nurses, dietitians and researchers from Asia, Australia, US, UK and South Africa.
The conference covered a variety of topics including pre-diabetics, new advances in pharmaceutical and complementary treatments of diabetes, self-management in diabetes, nutrition and diabetes, diabetes complications, and diabetes in different populations including children, pregnant women and the elderly. Keynote speakers for the event included Professor Harold E. Lebovitz from the US, Professor Richard IG Holt from the UK, and Professor Timothy Davis from Australia.
Two of the School’s students, Mohammad Talaei and Yeli Wang, who are pursuing their PhD under the supervision of Prof Koh Woon Puay, were selected for the oral presentations in the free paper presentation sessions. Mohammad was shortlisted for the best oral presentation and presented on “Dairy product such as milk decreases risk of Type 2 diabetes in Singapore Chinese”. Yeli was shortlisted and awarded the first prize for the ‘Professor Mustaffa Young Investigators’ Award’ for her presentation on “Interaction between body mass index and atherogenic dyslipdemia in association with risk of Type 2 diabetes”.
