The Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (LKCMedicine) and the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health recently hosted the “Diabetes Prevention in Asian Populations” workshop at the Clinical Sciences Building of the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine on 25 May 2017.
The workshop was co-chaired by LKCMedicine Dean Professor James Best and Dean of SSHSPH Prof Chia Kee Seng. Keynote presentations during the workshop included presentations by Prof Juliana Chan from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Prof Brian Oldenburg from the University of Melbourne and Prof Nihal Thomas from Christian Medical College, Vellore, India. With presenters coming from different parts of the world to share their knowledge and findings on diabetes in Asian populations , the workshop provided attendees with a chance to discuss and exchange ideas about the research on diabetes and how it is affecting the Asian populations. Discussion topics ranged from translation of clinical work into national level research programmes and healthcare policies to the complexity of behavioural change in trying to improve lifestyle factors that lead to diabetes.
This provided both schools with valuable insight to the presence of diabetes in Asian populations and this will aid future research collaborations between LKCMedicine, SSHSPH, the Ministry of Health amongst other schools and governmental agencies.
