Overview

This course provides an introduction to the concepts and techniques used to measure and improve the quality of healthcare. It will address current concerns with patient safety and medical errors, and explore systemic approaches to harm reduction. Participants will understand the methodologies and instruments for the measurement of quality in healthcare, including clinical outcome indicators, healthcare professionals’ performance measurement and patient satisfaction surveys. Strategies for managing quality, including the tools for continuous quality improvement in healthcare organisations, will be presented.

Who Should Attend?

Healthcare workers working in the area of patient safety and quality improvement.

Entry Requirements

At least 6 months of working experience in a healthcare setting.

Assessment & Certification

This is a SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) approved course. As part of SSG funding requirements, participants have to achieve at least 75% attendance and pass all assessment(s)/examination(s).

An electronic certificate will be issued to all participants who complete the course:

  • Certificate of Competence – Attain a ‘C’ grade or above and meet a minimum of 75% attendance
  • Certificate of Participation – Attain a grade lower than ‘C’ and meet a minimum of 75% attendance

Course Instructor

Associate Professor Fong Ngan Phoon

Dr Fong is currently a Joint Adjunct Associate Professor with the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health and the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine  at National University of Singapore. This appointment, since April 2009, involves teaching undergraduates and graduate students in public health, healthcare quality and physiology.

Prior to his current appointment, he was the Executive/Medical Director of St. Luke’s Hospital, a 200-bedded community hospital serving the health needs of the elderly.

He has been the module coordinator of the MPH module SPH5404 “Measuring and Managing Quality of Care” for the past 8 years.

Remarks:

  • All enrolled candidates will also be required to pay a Student Services Fee of S$25.46*.
  • Self-Sponsored participants can use their SkillsFuture Credits to pay for or offset course fees. SkillsFuture Credit claim has to be submitted to SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) within 60 days before course commencement. SSG will not allow claims to be made after the first day of the course.
  • The University reserves the right to review and adjust the course fees and make changes to the programme structure and requirements as necessary and accordingly without prior notice.
