Congratulations to Dr Swapnil Mishra on receiving the NUS Presidential Young Professorship award

Congratulations to Assistant Professor Swapnil Mishra on being conferred the NUS Presidential Young Professorship (PYP) award – making him the first Presidential Young Professor at the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health (SSHSPH). The prestigious PYP award is designed to help the University attract and retain the most talented and promising early career academics, enabling them to develop into world-class scholars.

Dr Mishra joined NUS in 2023 and is currently an Assistant Professor at SSHSPH (Primary), Institute of Data Science (Joint) and the Department of Statistics and Data Science, Faculty of Science (Joint); he is also a Singapore National Research Foundation (NRF) Fellow (Class of 2023). He completed his PhD in Computational Social Science (2019) and MSc in Machine Learning (2014) at the Australian National University (ANU). As a PhD student at ANU, he was awarded the ANU Domestic PhD scholarship, among several other grants and awards. Before that, he studied at Pune University, one of the top universities in India.

Dr Mishra’s expertise lies in developing flexible and scalable models for understanding various spatiotemporal data. His research spans a wide range of areas, including epidemics such as COVID-19, malaria, and HIV, as well as crime and social media analysis. His work focuses on algorithms to model point processes using both classical machine learning techniques and modern deep learning networks. Notably, Dr Mishra has made significant contributions to informing governmental responses during the COVID-19 pandemic through his research.
