Prof Saw Seang Mei Honoured Among Asia’s Top 50 Women Tech Leaders for Transformative Work in Ophthalmology

Heartiest congratulations to Prof Saw Seang Mei, who was recently honoured as one of Asia’s Top 50 Women Tech Leaders at the Inaugural Asia Women Tech Leaders Award (AWTLA) event. Held at the Sands Expo & Convention Centre, Marina Bay Sands on the occasion of International Women’s Day (8 March), the event showcased the exceptional achievements of women at the forefront of technological breakthroughs and innovations across Asia.

Prof Saw, who also holds joint appointments with Duke-NUS Medical School and the Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI), was recognised for her significant contributions to ophthalmology and her innovative use of technology to improve public health. As a physician epidemiologist and innovator, she has been instrumental in developing digital solutions and artificial intelligence applications to predict and manage high myopia in children, a pressing global health issue.

Her pioneering work—including the invention of the FitSight tracker, a patented lifestyle device aimed at slowing myopia progression in children, and the development of a novel AI technique for the early detection of myopia patterns in fundus image photos—exemplifies the transformative power of technology in healthcare.

Recognised as one of the World’s Top 100 influential people in Ophthalmology in 2014 and 2023, Prof Saw’s contributions have not only earned her accolades, but have also captured the attention of international media, including a live interview on BBC World News. Her dedication to leveraging technology to improve vision and quality of life for children across the globe reflects a deep commitment to harness innovation for the greater good.
