Disciplines

The programme focuses on seven disciplines.

Design 1

Genomics

Advances in genomic technologies and big data processing have enhanced our understanding of disease risks, pathogenesis, and personalized prevention and treatment. These innovations also support timely diagnosis and interventions to limit infectious disease spread through genome sequencing. Our team conducts advanced research in genomics and its applications in public health. The research focuses on molecular epidemiology, pathogen genomics, bioinformatics, and population genetics to understand genetic variations in microbes and their role in disease outbreaks. Computational methods, particularly using population genetics models, are being developed to analyze transmission patterns and monitor antimicrobial resistance. The research also emphasizes the integration of pathogen genomics into health systems for better management and surveillance of infectious diseases.

Modelling

The Centre for Epidemic Research and Modelling conducts advanced quantitative research to understand the dynamics and prevention of disease outbreaks and assess the potential impact of interventions.

Its modeling expertise is central to shaping evidence-based policies at both national and regional levels, enabling timely and effective responses to public health challenges. The Centre also serves as a hub for capacity building, offering specialized training in quantitative public health techniques to equip researchers and policymakers with essential skills.

Clinical Trials

ADVANcing Clinical Evidence in Infectious Diseases (ADVANCE-ID) is a collaborative network of over 100 hospitals across the globe, dedicated to clinical research in infectious diseases. Its goal is to strengthen the evidence base for optimizing patient outcomes for endemic and epidemic infectious diseases, with a focus on antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

Current research initiatives include large-scale AMR surveillance and randomised controlled trials for novel diagnostics and antibiotics. ADVANCE-ID collaborates closely with national governments and international health policy bodies to ensure research findings drive actionable change.

Epidemiology

The Epidemiology explores disease patterns, determinants, and distribution within populations to uncover insights to develop intervention strategies and evaluate health promotion efforts. We conduct epidemiological studies on disease serology, transmission dynamics, vaccine effectiveness and coverage, genomics, environmental exposures, and antimicrobial resistance.

Climate and Health

The Climate, Environment and Health Programme focuses on evaluating health risks from climate and environmental changes, particularly in Southeast Asia, one of the most climate-vulnerable regions. The research covers infectious disease dynamics, air pollution, sustainable food systems, and machine learning for health data. Using data-driven methods, environmental impacts on health are monitored, and solutions to protect human and ecosystem well-being are developed. The work bridges climate science, environmental science, and public health to foster collaboration across Singapore and the region.

Health Economics

Our research focuses on the economic burden and impact of infectious diseases in Singapore and internationally. We use health technology assessment (HTA) methodologies to evaluate interventions for infectious diseases, ensuring that health policies are informed by evidence. We also organize training programs and symposiums to build capacity in HTA.

Socio-Behavioural Studies

Insights from socio-behavioural studies gives us an understanding of how people make decisions and take actions. We explore human behaviours, social interactions, and motivations through epidemiological quantitative and qualitative approaches to examine diverse public health topics, including COVID-19, maternal and child health, vaccine uptake, and health systems.
