NUS-NUHS-MIT Healthcare AI Datathon and Expo

09 Jul 2018

Smart tools and new technology to aid healthcare processes were showcased at the NUS-NUHS-MIT Healthcare AI Datathon and Expo held on 3–8 July.

Jointly organised by the School, NUHS, AI Singapore and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the event saw tech experts and healthcare professionals come together to develop artificial intelligence (AI) and smart tools to address challenges in the healthcare sector.

During the Expo, Dr Ngiam Kee Yuan, NUHS group chief technology officer, and Assistant Professor Feng Mengling introduced NUHS' own AI system: Discovery AI.

Using hospital data, the system can perform tasks, including the diagnosis of appendicitis in those with complaints of stomach pain, and even predict the risk of readmission in patients who have been hospitalised for various medical conditions.

Dr Feng is also conducting research on an AI tool that can detect abnormalities in mammograms, and, if rolled out, could improve the productivity of radiologists by four times.

"The tool reduces the time that radiologists have to spend looking at a mammogram and may also point out something that they missed before,” said Dr Feng.
