The Future of Public Health: Leadership Perspectives from East and West

Panel discussion with Dr Ickovics, Dean Vermund and Dean Teo

As part of its series 'Innovations in Public Health: Science, Practice, Impact', Yale-NUS College held the talk titled 'The Future of Public Health: Leadership Perspectives from East and West' on 19 March 2018.

Professor Tan Tai Yong, President of Yale-NUS College welcomed guests and started the event. Professor Peter Salovey, President of Yale University then gave a short address and introduced the speakers: Professor Sten Vermund, Dean of Yale School of Public Health and Anna M.R. Lauder Professor of Public Health; Professor Teo Yik Ying, Dean of NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health; and Dr Jeannette Ickovics, Visiting Professor at Yale-NUS and Herman Professor of Social and Behavioural Sciences at Yale School of Public Health.

Prof Vermund started with an introduction on the growing interest in Asia, technology and integration of systems, followed by Prof Teo who spoke about the digitisation of health and highlighted that a multisectoral and multidisciplinary approach was required to tackle public health problems.

After the talks was a panel discussion with Prof Vermund, Prof Teo and Dr Ickovics that focused on global health challenges, building capacity with social and technological innovation, as well as how to engineer environments and inspire behaviour change through the use of liberal arts.

The event also showcased an exhibition of photographs and graphic design by students from Dr Ickovics’ course, Community Health Assessment and Intervention, with topics ranging from early childhood to older adults, and addressing a variety of social, psychological and behavioural issues that impact health.
