Congratulations, winners of the Antibiotic Resistance Competition!

The World Health Organization considers antimicrobial resistance one of the greatest threats to global health. Experts fear that as the pace of bacteria developing resistance to antibiotics increases, and development of novel antibiotics lags behind, we will soon enter a “post-antibiotic era” where antibiotics no longer work most of the time.

In an effort to raise public awareness on the issue of antimicrobial resistance, as well the precious and finite resource that is antibiotics, the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health and Ngee Ann Polytechnic jointly organised two competitions for school students in Singapore:

  • “Post-Antibiotic World” Essay Contest (1 June to 30 August 2017)
  • “Antibiotic Resistance: How It Impacts Us” Video Contest (1 June to 30 September 2017)

The two competitions were funded by the Antibiotics Awareness Fund, a charity fund set up in October 2016 at the National University of Singapore.

There were a total of 10 videos submitted for the Video Contest, while 36 Secondary School and 17 Junior College and Polytechnic students submitted their work for the Essay Contest.

The essays were reviewed by a distinguished panel of judges:

  • Mr Alvin Pang: a poet, editor and author who has been published internationally in over 20 languages.
  • Mr Tan Dan Feng: who has worked in fields of language and publishing for 25 years and is the founder of The Select Centre, a literary arts organisation.
  • Dr Lau Quek Choon: Senior Manager at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, with research interests in pathogenic and beneficial bacteria.

The videos were judged by Dr Lau and Associate Professor Hsu Li Yang, Antimicrobial Resistance Programme Leader.

We would like to congratulate the winners of the Essay Contest and Video Contest:
